Camelthorn Chalet - A spacious self-catering chalet set within the desert landscape, offering panoramic views of the Kalahari plains and spectacular sunsets. The chalet features two bedrooms, including a loft room with a queen-size bed and a second bedroom with two single beds. Guests can enjoy a cosy kitchenette, a private deck with built-in braai facilities, and a solar-heated splash pool, creating a comfortable and private desert retreat.
Bessiebos Campsite - An unfenced campsite located along the dry Kuruman Riverbed, surrounded by large camelthorn trees. This peaceful site offers a true wilderness experience, allowing guests to immerse themselves in nature. We had such a great time at Thota Lodge! The landscapes are absolutely beautiful, and we saw so many animals. We also went for walks through the savanna and really enjoyed the experience. The hosts are incredibly welcoming, and if you have any questions at all, they’ll be there to help and make sure you have the best stay possible. New: There’s now a coffee shop on site where you can buy honey, meat and handmade knives, as well as enjoy a coffee. All while taking in a beautiful view of the savanna. We 100% recommend this place!
Thota Lodge is quite a unique and special place. As a self-catering lodge, it offers everything you need to feel at home, topped off with an amazing view over the Kalahari. It’s a great place for anyone who loves being outdoors and enjoying nature, while still having the comfort of proper, African-style accommodation. The sunsets are stunning, and birdlife is definitely busy almost around the clock - perfect spot for birding activities. The fireplace is inviting for great braai nights under the African sky — which, by the way, is absolutely breathtaking out there.
A stunning oasis of silence in the Kalahari. No internet, no electricity (solar-power only), no people. Just a rustic, offgrid camp and a thatched chalet with 360 degree views of nature. We camped at Bessiebos, and stayed in the Camelthorn chalet. Both provided a divine break from the modern world's madness. Many thanks to our hosts for the warm welcome - we had an amazing stay!
I had the pleasure of staying at this charming little guest house tucked away in the heart of the Kalahari, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel genuinely welcome with their warm smiles and attentive hospitality. You can tell they care about every guest and go out of their way to ensure you’re comfortable. The rooms are minimalistic in the best possible way — clean, thoughtfully designed, and equipped with everything you need. No unnecessary clutter, just a calming, functional space that lets the natural beauty outside take center stage. And what a view it is! The scenery is absolutely magnificent — vast open landscapes, endless skies, and the kind of quiet that lets you hear your own thoughts. Being surrounded by nature in such a pure, unspoiled setting was deeply relaxing and soul-fulfilling. It’s the kind of place that reminds you to slow down, breathe, and just be present. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape with heartfelt hospitality and the raw beauty of the Kalahari, this Lodge is a perfect choice.
Our experience at Thota Lodge was nothing less than exceptional, Amazing. Friendly staff and clean Rooms and the best of all is the small pool to cool down. The farm life is very special and the nature is truly mind blowing. I really had a great stay and will definitely be going again. I recommend Thota Lodge for your next Kalahari visit.
