Most camping mishaps are easily avoidable, with just a little preparation beforehand really going a long way. Take a look at some of our essential camping tips that help take the stress out of planning your getaway, so you can spend less time solving problems and more time enjoying the outdoors.
Do some homework before you go
If you’re new to camping, we suggest doing some homework ahead of time. Every campsite in South Africa is different. Some have ablutions, electricity, and braai facilities, while others are completely off the grid. Think about what you’re looking for and prepare accordingly.
Before hitting the road, check things like what facilities are available, whether there are any fire restrictions, and what the weather has in store. South African weather conditions can change quickly, especially in the mountains and along the coast, so it’s worth planning for cooler evenings even if the daytime forecast looks warm.
Pack for comfort, not just convenience
You may be tempted to just throw everything into the boot, but a few well-chosen essentials make for a more pleasant experience than overpacking ever could, especially with limited space.
Wear layers so you’re comfortable from day to night, and don’t underestimate the value of a good sleeping bag, sleeping mat and a reliable torch or headlamp, as some camping spots are dark at night. These are the kind of items you’ll appreciate long after the novelty of camping wears off.
Test your gear before you leave
Whether you have new gear or gear that’s been sitting in the garage for months, test it at home first. It’s a quick way to make sure that everything is in place and working, nothing is damaged, and everything fits together (pitching a tent takes a bit of practice!). It’s much easier to replace a missing tent peg before you leave than at the campsite after the sun has gone down.
Keep meals simple
Camping food doesn’t have to be complicated to be enjoyable.
Plan a few easy meals ahead of time, prep ingredients at home where you can, and store everything in sealed containers or a cooler box. Not only does it make cooking easier, but it also helps keep curious wildlife out of your campsite.
Bring a well-stocked first aid kit
Hopefully you won’t need it, but you’ll be glad it’s there if you do. Along with the basics, pack any personal medication, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a few extras like tweezers and rehydration sachets. If you’re camping somewhere remote, the nearest pharmacy could be quite a drive away.
Respect the environment
Part of what makes camping so rewarding is spending time in places that still feel wild and off the beaten track.
Stick to marked trails, keep a respectful distance from wildlife, and never feed animals, no matter how friendly they seem. Dispose of your rubbish properly, leave your campsite as you found it, and always make sure your fire is completely out before turning in for the night or heading home.
Plan for the little things
Some of the most useful items take up hardly any space.
Download offline maps before you lose signal, bring a reusable water bottle, pack a couple of rubbish bags, and let someone know where you’re camping if you’re heading somewhere remote. They’re small details, but they can make your trip much smoother.
Remember why you're there
Camping isn’t about having the latest gear or the perfect setup. It’s about slowing down, spending time outdoors, and enjoying places that are often only a short drive from home.
Get the basics right, leave a little room for spontaneity, and you’ll spend less time worrying about what you’ve forgotten and more time soaking up everything that makes camping so rewarding.
Whether you’re pitching a tent beside a river, settling into a mountain campsite, or opting for a little extra comfort with a glamping stay, you’ll find plenty of places to reconnect with nature on Night Sky Bookings.
